I'd guess that you'd go on the ticketmaster website (or whoever is the main legit supplier) and go through the booking system to get a ticket. If you get one, then its not sold out (then cancel if you don't want the ticket - most hold them for a minute or so). However, if it can't retrieve you a ticket, then its likely to be sold out (or at least from a legit source).

I know that works with the former livenation (now ticketmaster) in the uk.

Ticketmaster holds back tickets frequently and the fact that tickets aren't available, doesn't necessarily mean its a sell-out. For example, in Boston yesterday, a large block of tickets became available at around 2:00 PM - or so it appeared.
