Korn raped Another Brick in the Wall Pts 1,2 & 3.... but then again I don't really like the original tracks as it is.

There was a dreadful cover of WYWH on Rockstar Supernova the other day (as was alerted to me by a friend... don't worry, I don't watch that stupid show). You can see that monstrosity here... http://youtube.com/watch?v=6oY0Mj8BAmM

I've heard Les Claypool's covers, they ****in rock, he does the Floyd tunes justice.
Particle is another band that has covered Floyd tunes live, they are a "Jam Band" also and have a nice sound.

Roughcut - Yes, Les Claypool and rimus just rock, no matter what they do :) And i think Les' Voice goes along with the PF songs well too :)

ResiAlien - mmm i've never been a fan of Korn but i will check their covers. I 've just listened to that Supernova stuff... gave me chills
Just how flat and dull can they be? yuck...

nfloyd - i found Voivod's cover here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoZSsL9yVb8

Thanx everyone for replying ! I'm in a bit of hurry just now so i will check back later ^^

Love the Claypool covers. Here's a couple more on the obscure side:

My Morning Jacket: "Mother," from their latest album "Z"
Dar Williams [w/ Ani DiFranco]: "Comfortably Numb" from her latest album "My Better Self"

Both songs nicely done, I especially like the Dar Williams cover. I'll try to think of some others.

EDIT: Amazing what you can find on the internet with some free time:

AFAIK, none of these are listed on SecondHandSongs.com (http://www.secondhandsongs.com/artist/560.html).

The Squirrels
(all of) Dark Side Of The Moon - Not-So-Bright Side of the Moon (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:6n5tk6rxekrh)

Camper Van Beethoven & Eugene Chadborne
"Careful With That Axe, Eugene" - Camper Van Chadborne (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:2c8n1v0ozzpa)

Camper Van Beethoven
"Astronomy Domine" - Vampire Can Mating Oven (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:gukbikn6bb19)

Hawkwind
"Cymbaline" - Hawkwind (http://www.hawkwind.com/alb/hw.htm) (bonus track on EMI reissue)

AMG also lists two disco versions of "Have A Cigar (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=17:616438)" -- dunno which is the one I heard. You could just plug titles into AMG's search by song to find a lot more.

Well and there's RPWL covering
Opel ("Stock" & "Start The Fire Live")
Welcome To The Machine ("Start The Fire Live")
Cymbaline ("Start The Fire Live")

On Bootlegs You may also find Remember A Day, STCFTHOTS, Dogs, Fat Old Sun and quite some more. ;)

Personally I like their very powerful interpretation of Welcome To The Machine the most! :D

PS: I forgot to mention Anathema, which everybody does since they do not even have a record deal these days.
They covered "Your Possible Pasts", "One Of The Few" and "Goodbye Cruel World" on one of the darkest Records all time: Alternative 4. On their recent DVD A Moment In Time is "Comfortably Numb" with some Heavy-Guitar-Solo at the end.

Don't know why it took me four pages to remember this band - Blue Floyd - a side project of Gov't Mule's drummer Matt Abst. Blue Floyd plays blues reworkings of PF songs. No discs released, just a live band - but oh my, what a live band.

Here's a link to their web site:

When I return I've got a couple of little uploads to add to the audio list in honor of this thread ;)

On October 10, 1987, PINK FLOYD played an impromptu, 'secret' gig at a club in New York City called The World. The set was comprised, exclusively of blues, soul and R&B covers, including "Been Down So Long," "Respect," "Born Under A Bad Sign," and "Kansas City." This marked the first and only time in 20 years that PINK FLOYD had performed cover material of any kind; and the 1984 Waters-Clapton collaboration notwithstanding, the only time the band harkened back to acknowledge their musical roots in the blues

That's exactly what I want to know. I haven't been able to track it down anywhere. When it said "secret" I imagine it was a private affair (the band with close friends and family, etc)

So the chances of ever digging up something like that are close to nill. :(

Luckily I have not. So far I've succeeded in avoiding it.

They also covered a Floyd song or two on another album... the name of which escapes me. But the album was nearly entirely covers of other people's material. The image on the front of the album is of a boy on a beach or something. I care too little to look it up right now...

I'm currently putting together a compilation of live/lossless/non-commercial Syd covers. I hate to think that I have to go and download some Phish concerts, but I guess we all have to make sacrifices for the memory of Syd.

Funny thing is that the entry in the FAQ has about 8 internal inconsistencies...too many 'shrooms and not enough proof-reading I guess.

I'm told this is a video of The Mars Volta covering Interstellar Overdrive:

But I haven't been able to watch so that I can confirm that. Damn video's taking forever to load--in fact the whole internet's really sluggish. I let that video sit for 10 minutes and it only loaded the first 14 seconds... so I gave up.

My "band", !!*, has covered Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, but if you are at all interested in authenticity (which, from the looks of it, you are), you'll most likely want to avoid it. It's quite a reinterpretation. That said, there's certainly no danger of "technical virtuosity" involved.

Those samples are great...

...but that review is so narrowminded and shit-brained.

"I'm not a huge Pink Floyd fan. It's always seemed to me that Floyd was for stoners and that enjoying the trippy, solo-heavy Dark Side of Moon (DSOTM) required supreme patience or an altered state of mind. Its nearly 5 minute average song length doesn't exactly lend itself to the snappy, post-Beatles songwriting to which we a cappella fans are accustomed. Furthermore, as a solo-driven band, Pink Floyd is horizontally oriented, not one to indulge in the vertical layers of rich harmonies that a cappella favors. And DSOTM isn't exactly spirited, around-the-campfire, sing-along stuff. Many less ambitious a cappella groups would laugh at the concept of covering an entire album, much less one this challenging."

...*sigh*... the typical, uninformed progressive rock stereotypes.

" My sincerest wish is that this interpretation does not get in the way of the beauty and richness of the original masterpiece; I have no desire to replace it in anyone's mind. to them as a lament for their late lead guitarist and band namesake Michael

Houser, who died back in 2002 of pancreatic cancer.

Marillion covers 'Arnold Layne' sometimes, especially in acoustic format. Great dynamic version with Steve Hogarth overwhelmed with joy playing that track!

Also performed by Steve Hogarth's solo band.

If I remember rightly a few years ago (maybe early 90's) a band called Fortran 5 released a version of Bike where the vocals all samples of lines from films by Sid James (he of the Carry On.. films).

good thread. regarding Phish doing DSOTM, it is pretty good considering there was hardly a rehearsal for it. Complete album almost fully off the cuff??!?! The vocal solo on great gig was done with an electrolux vacuum cleaner on the drummers mouth.

Recently I recorded a throw together band that learned Fearless the day of the show and played it instrumental that night and for the rest of their 4 night mini tour. The band was made up of Mike Dillon, Marco Benevento, and Reed Mathis who are all accomplished musicians. Once I am able to mix the recording I'll try to post it here.

Edit : just heard it , its acoustic ... not bad.

ekoostik Hookah has covered RLH and CN live, and acquitted themselves quite well. Check out this show I recorded:
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=505210

Widespread Panic frequently plays IO and AD live, often as instrumental jams, and also does them quite well.

Keller Williams has covered Fearless, and I think it was the Yonder Mountain String Band that covered Goodbye Blue Sky in a bluegrass version, but I'm not positive. I'll get back to you on that one.

PS: I forgot to mention Anathema, which everybody does since they do not even have a record deal these days.
They covered "Your Possible Pasts", "One Of The Few" and "Goodbye Cruel World" on one of the darkest Records all time: Alternative 4. On their recent DVD A Moment In Time is "Comfortably Numb" with some Heavy-Guitar-Solo at the end.

exactly! And everyone should check those out. Especially Comfortably Numb and Your Possible Past.

Catherine Wheel does a pretty good version of Wish You Were Here, on their 1996 album, 'Like Cats and Dogs', on the Mercury Records label. The whole album is pretty good too.
No link though, sorry, though I'm sure its out there somewhere.

Some time during 1978 I bought Discoballs tribute album to Pink Floyd,
Rosebud, which covered:-

Have a cigar
Free Four
Summer 68
Interstellar Overdrive

Money
One of these days
Arnold Layne
The main theme from "more"

Surprisingly, I haven't played it much over the years, but as I've found it I will give it a go.

This is an awesome thread! But I wonder... my main interests are covers of DsotM and Careful With that Axe, Eugene (my favorite Floyd song and currently battling Led Zeppelin's Bron-Y-Aur Stomp for the position of my all-time favorite song). Any help?

I've also been considering doing a cover of a Floyd song for my (hopeful... :D) album, but I've no idea which one. I want to do something good, but also not frequently covered. I really want to do CWTAE, but I don't know anyone who can scream like Roger, and I definitely can't, as I don't even know how he does it. It's... creepy.

Any suggestions?

There are several bands that I know of that have covered all of DSOTM, and they were probably all mentioned in the thread:
Phish
.moe
Dream Theater
Easy Star All-Stars

A damn fine cover version of 'Set the controls for the heart of the sun' can be found on the 1994 debut album called Xcelsior by the Finnish band Nemesis. One of the very very few cover versions I actually enjoy to listen to again and again. Fantastic album, highly recommended, but unfortunately it isn't available anymore, see here (http://www.nettilinja.fi/~ahassine/disco/xcelsior.htm). If any of the moderators would tell me whether it's ok to torrent a single song from an out-of-print CD by a virtually unknown artist here on Yeeshkul!, then I would do it, in case anyone should be interested.

Another nice song I like isn't exactly a cover version, but rather a sequel (or whatever you want to call it) of 'Careful with that axe, Eugene!' called 'The Return of Eugene, Be Careful!' by the German band Electric Orange on their 1996 album 'Orange commutation'. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Orange-Commutation-Electric/dp/B000007YNO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1198318203&sr=8-1)

I own several tribute albums, which I don't want to elaborate on, because they are either a) a waste of time and money b) rather futile c) an audible insult or d) all of the above ... ;) I can't help it and probably it's just me, but I can't stand these tribut albums and I regret to have spent so much money on what IMHO is just rubbish. :o

Voivod are just one of the finest bands ever.... Was surprised to see them show up here.

Piggy (RIP) was a big floyd fan which is why the 2 covers of AD and TNS were done. I'm sure a few others would have followed.

If you have a look a Voivod videos when he is not wearing his standard issue voivod t-shirts then floyd ones are present instead. I think the video for "Ravenous Medicine" there's a fine Wall t-shirt present.

Olly;)

Lucky man, he was supposed to be a great bloke and there was talk of more floyd covers. CWTAE would have been an interesting cover by them - definitely! Both their covers (IMHO) are very good.

Only thing with voivod was that seldomly left Canada and particularly did not like going to the UK having played here very few times (I should have made the effort to go to Canada!). Still in my opinion they are one of the finest metal band and very unique in their field which could be described as pyschadelic thrash (if thats a genre).

All the best and have a good one Seth,

Days of the New - Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2 (live)

A pretty much unknown acoustic "grunge"/progressive (that's acoustic progressive) band/project that I'm a huge fan of, lead by amazing guitarist Travis Meeks (who could be an award-winning study for any psychologist... Asperger's Syndrome is only the tip of the iceberg... I happen to think he's bi-polar, too... but he's an incredible guy to know, despite all that... I'm glad to know him).

The Advantage, a terrific and super-tight group that covers NES (Nintendo) video game music, played an Interstellar Overdrive "teaser" at an acoustic show:

It'd be nice to find a non-acoustic show where they play it, since they're at their best when plugged in. See here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbOJ_wW5Owo), here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHhsT6uLjS4), and especially here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDS6i3j11jU) for them at their best (with a nice Nick Mason-esque drumstick bit in that last one!).

Wow !!... I never realised so many bands n' artists covered Floyd material
Tried to read most of them especially the long listings, so heres my pennies worth
Cracking Dublin band called "Aslan" do a great acoustic cover of "Wish You Were Here"
and I am sure I read somewhere that "Micheal Stipe and REM" years ago liked to throw "Dark Globe" into the live set every now and again.

It's in two places -- on the Canada CD single, and on their 3-CD rarities boxset ("A Lifetime of Temporary Relief") which comes highly recommended. I remember being completely gobsmacked when they first covered it! The guitarist uses open G tuning, so it made a lot of sense from a practical point of view. They do a very nice job with the song.

A fairly new bluegrass group called Poor Mans Whiskey released a cover album of DSOM. I heard the first few tracks and its highly listenable. Here's a link from LMA to a live show where they play it

I was at the Dead show in Charlotte '04 when they played SOYCD I vaguely remember it being decent although the vocals werent all that great. The show itself is quite good for a Dead show and worth hearing. Here's a link to that although theres so seeders at the moment.

I really want to do CWTAE, but I don't know anyone who can scream like Roger, and I definitely can't, as I don't even know how he does it. It's... creepy.

Any suggestions?

Well my friends and I did something that no one ever tried before. We covered One In A Million. So now there's a decent sounding recording of it.

Somewhere earlier in this thread there is a mention of the NYC show where PF played a bunch of old R&B covers. Many years ago I posted this on Y. Do a search for Taylor, Fury & Floyd and it will be found.

I've grabbed my "A Saucerful of Pink" CD on Cherry Red Records from 1995 and it seems there's a few on there not mentioned. eg.

Psychic TV - SCFTHOTS, Controlled Bleeding - ABITW1&2

Too tired to search the thread for each track but wanted to 'alert' y'all.

Here's a track listing for it:

In case anyone is still looking for new cover versions of Pinks Floyd songs: I got the new album of Vibravoid called Minddrugs today and it features an over 22 minute long version of Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun which is quite good IMHO. Definitely worth a listen (as is the rest of the album).

After seeing 1349 last night, I forgot they did a version of STCFTHOTS. Very different to what you'd expect from the song.

So thats another to add to the list!

Peace,
Olly.

I was surfing around the web today, and I came across this. I've never heard of this guy before, but he does a pretty respectful job of it. It's almost 40 minutes, so make sure you have some time to kill.

This recording was made for NYCTaper, its a multitrack of MV & EE playing "Green Is The Color". Guitar work is spot on, the vocals aren't that strong.
