    Default Music & Politics

    Hi guys

I'd like to know if there is anyone who has the same problem with connecting music and politics like me.

As a university graduate in geography I know that a lot of things have very complex connections between themselves and it takes a lot of effort to understand them. There isn't simple right or wrong for complex things like politics from ordinary citizen point of view. And musicians, who are able to to make beatiful art (music) are destroying it for me with their politic views (Waters, Pearl jam, Yorke etc.). Hell, they are not educated in it, I think they have too much work with composing and playing gigs to gain enough information to make yes/no opinion, why should they tell the whole world about it?

Noone except a few people in the world knows if Bush invaded countries for oil, surely noone can tell if the world order is governed by huge corporations. I don't like people who believe movies feeding people one-side-point-of-view information about these things (Zeitgeist, 9/11 Truth etc) and a lot of my favourite artists seem that they love these. And it pi*ses me.

Anyone has a same problem? :)

Music has been used to express a political point of view for hundereds (if not thousands) of years. Some lyrics are overt, some covert. One of music's primary tasks is to touch us and make us feel and think. And it's a strong weapon to use if you want to make a stand for something you believe in.

Where have you been, my blue-eyed son?

Sex Pistols, anyone???? They lasted about 18 months, and changed they way music was played and listened to forever. They had legal ranglings with their manager and Record Companies, and were brought to court over the use of the the word BOLLOCKS on the front of their ONLY studio LP.

35 years later, along comes someone like yourself, Andy517, and posts something that is nothing short of rubbish.....Tool sing about loss of family members as do Pearl Jam...They both sing about the nature of multi-corporate commercialism for a reason...It is ripping them, (and everybody else) off.

What pisses me off is that there are some activists out there (ever seen the movie ''JUST DO IT'')? who resort to non violent actions to let the rest of us now just exactly what is happening, and everyone calls them tree-huggers!! They should get more recognition...What other type of art would lock down wall street for 24 hours???What other type of art changed the face of cultural history...Many times over?

Just take a listen to Never Mind The Bollocks (Sex Pistols), Dark Side Of The Moon (Floyd), Unknown Pleasures (Joy Division), Germfree Adolescence (X-Ray Spex), and let's not forget Animals (Floyd), a vicious attack on the system and personal and cultural problems. These albums are from the 70's, and reflect the attitude of the people through music. These, along with countless other albums woke people up from their bedrooms and made them get out there and do something to change the horrible world that they were living in...And they did.

'' Hell, they are not educated in it, I think they have too much work with composing and playing gigs to gain enough information to make yes/no opinion, why should they tell the whole world about it?''....You students do a lot of shouting in the streets about your rights....How about coming up with an idea to tell the world your woesand putting it to musuc?...Oh! Wait....that idea is already gone...You don't have to listen if you don't want to...But IMHO...you are a bit backward in your synopsis of the world today....I hope its not Historical Geography that you are studying, because, if it is....:o

Well, thank you for your interesting posts. There is surely some truth to them. I won't be discussing it much, from my experience it is usually just a long flamewar (and I am interested in opinions, not flamewars . Just a few remarks.

    - music is expressing these kinds of opinions for hundreds of years, true, but to me it seems that it doesnt make people think, it makes them copy the opinion. I'd think about it without music and make my opinion, so would a lot of others I hope.

    - to be clear - I have nothing against expressing personal feelings. I love Joy Division because of it. And PF. Cultural are also ok but in the way that people today are used to lazy lifes not that all politicians and companies are evil

    - as a student, I would never go to some demonstration and tell the government to debt my country more so it could give me a work. I'd rather work my ass off to get a job. And it is possible even with the high rate of unemployement in my country. I have to admit 80% of peoplr are doing only the shouting in the streets, bit this is about my opinion

Edit: ad. Sex Pistols - I dont like typical punk because punkers are masters in simplifying of things that cannot be simplifyed. Ok, it might be sexy, might make people think (read a book about it?), but I don't like it.

Sorry for mistakes, written on mobile phone.
