Pink floyd the early years 1965-1972

To me one of the most exciting releases of the year is Miles Davis Bootleg Series #5 (Freedom Jazz Dance). They simply released the session reels for 9 tracks and added a couple of more outtakes at the end. (I'm pretty sure they did a similar thing for Bob Dylan, but I'm less familiar with his oeuvre.) Hearing the band in action was thrilling, even when things are sometimes horribly bad. There are obvious limitations to doing this for Pink Floyd, but it is the level of completeness and intimacy we crazy fans are looking for. I know the Syd fans want to hear the session reels for his solo sessions. Don't overthink it. Just digitize the tapes, track them, and release them. We'll buy it.

How cool would it be to have a box dedicated only to all the outtakes from Syd's first two albums. They did a bit of it with the 'Crazy Diamond' box where they put outtakes at the end of each CD. But to have it all (or everything that is listenable) would be fantastic. They could also include a bonus disc of the full 1974 session even though it's very unfocused and unfinished. I love Syd's solo work, especially the more obscure stuff.

Bonus disk of the 1974 session? Probably not. Bonus 10-15 minutes of non-silence is probably more likely.

Whereas I am terribly happy that they are putting some little bits from "The Committee" on the box set, one thing that is little known is that Syd Barrett apparently spent a day in a studio with Max Steuer recording music for the film - music which was taken away, according to Max, from the studio by Syd's management. Now.... if that story is true, and we really have no reason to believe otherwise, I think releasing the reel(s) from that session would be very worthwhile (or, at least, more likely to be worthwhile than the 1974 session).

I never heard or heard of 'Double O Bo', 'Remember Me', 'Walk With Me, Sydney' and 'Butterfly'. There's probably already a topic on this on Y! but I can't find it. Might start a topic on it. Can we call the 'Early Years Box' the box to end all boxes if these aren't in it?

Thanks for this. Fascinating to listen to finally direct from the masters as they chose to push Syd's vocals upfront compared to what we had before... the "backing vocals" panned to one channel were intriguing to listen to and there's some mad guitar work in there as well I felt I was hearing for the first time. Have to admit that now I can understand why Roger Waters got the horrors about this as Syd's laughter at the end - now heard in crystal clear detail - is disturbing.

That still doesn't justify keeping it unreleased for 49 years though as it's a great song and an important part of Syd history. Can't wait to hear how they mixed "Scream" and getting to listen to "Beechwoods" in master quality for the first time. I'm also intrigued about the new mix of "Jugband" to see if there's any extra details or elements.
