I think the theory is sound. Raise your hand if you've lost your only copy of something you have downloaded due to a HD crash. Dealing with redundant backups is a pain. RAID is still expensive. The privacy concerns are overblown. No one cares about your Pink Floyd torrents. Sure, it costs money but so does buying hard drives all the time.

But then I've found the technology falls short.

Well, I backup to externals since more than 15 years now. As you say it´s cruel when you lose a lot in an HD crash - this happened to me too. HD space became really cheap compared to 15 years before. 4 TB for an solid external for around 100,-- € isn´t that much anymore. I have external HDs which are running more than 12 years without any problems and if they will fail I replace them without any loss. The process is automated, easy and controlled if you have an good backup program. Maybe the ´cloud´is not interested in my Floyd collection, but there are way to many people uploading their daily and private life there. And it can be lost everything there too - don´t think that you will get any guarantee from the Amazon predators or others....
Just my two cents. Everybody is free to save stuff wherever they like... For me it is to reckless to store data at servers somewhere - especially nowadays. Privacy concerns are overblown? Nope!

In my humble opinion, this is partly missing the point. I agree with you about the "insecure" part, but there are secure cloud providers and there are ways of doing all the securing locally, and uploading encrypted data in an incremental backup friendly way to potentially insecure services, where because your data is encrypted it's likely to be safe enough for the current state of the art. Granted, some of these solutions are probably still only usable by fairly technical people.

But given you can secure your data, you may still ask "why"? My answer is redundancy. What happens to all your nice external HD backups when your home is burgled and all your portable stuff (computers, external drives) are nicked? Or everything is damaged in a fire. If you can take your physical backups offsite, fine. But it's not so easy to organise (I always never get around to taking a backup drive to someone else in the family), so having a physical backup PLUS a secure cloud backup is the way to go. I certainly wouldn't have a cloud backup as my only backup.

Your thoughts about redundancy are very interesting... Think you deal with this stuff mainly when it´s to late. Storing things somewhere outside and updating it frequently is surely an possibility to think about...

For me personally, my backup procedure is a bit more expensive but it keeps me happy and content. I have everything stored on mechanical drives and I back-up EVERYTHING to single and double layer BD discs. I've had one HDD fail on me in 15+ years and I had everything already backed up on BDR's, so replacing all the stuff was not a problem. The only cloud service I use is google drive, and that's mainly for a few pictures and documents here and there. The convenience factor is what makes these cloud services viable IMO. You can access them from anywhere, PC, LAPTOP, CELL PHONE, etc... Plus, like google drive, you can toss people links to share stuff, which is nice. I would never upload critical stuff for back-up though.

as far as i understand, 6$ for a basic account, per month, so 72$ per year
as far as i understand, the basic account does not allow for sharing files with anyone. next step up, 10$ a month allows for that.
it DOES allow for streaming your content (AMZC does not)
am not sure about the unlimited bit, it says:
    Unlimited online backup
Backup your whole PC or Mac, no matter how many files you've got. --> for the basic account.
but then, comparing the three versions (basic, briefcase and pro) it reads (for basic)
    Your personal cloud storage space
Store whatever you want on your Briefcase. Files don't need to be on your computers, and can be kept just in your cloud storage. Add extra space for just €6.00 per TB. --> it has a red cross for basic, and a check for the two more expensive accounts.

not really convinced. unless someone can proof me wrong.
