pftest,
An interesting concept. However, if you want a world wide audience, the time is a major part for america/europe (probably the most active floyd areas) are quite a distant apart on the clock. America (south or north) have several time zones (think 4 from one side to other) whilst Europe has at least 3 from UK to Russia. Plus there's 4/5 between either side of the Atlantic (I think). I'm sure someone here is good at time. Plus as Andy states, Clocks in the UK alter twice a year (how daft is that?). I'd have a look to see whats what if it comes good for you. Peace, Olly. |

I love this idea...one big PF party per week--worldwide. (I'll start making the popcorn!) The time thing is, indeed, a major factor. Perhaps you could, as someone else pointed out, loop the stream. Also, why not archive each video stream? That way, if we have Floydians in a completely wacky time-zone, they can watch it when they want to--same goes for anyone who misses a show. What do you guys think?

the other alternative is have either separate streams or seprate streamings for some of of these times zones that are too far apart. like one for europe, and one for north america.
But let people from either place be able to watch whatever stream they please. Just so this way no one really has to be on the lossing end of the stick. Such as if the stream it 7 new york time people from the UK don't have to stay up till midnight, and vise versa. And then we should try for at least once a month on say a weekend we split the difference for the time zone's and try to have everyone watching one stream. This way this Idea doesn't have to go to waste.

Notwithstanding the even murkier issues of broadcasting unofficial material, you really need to test this out on a realtime server that you have access to and see if it's a workable idea regards to bandwidth availability. Audio should be fairly straghtforward, but video... Then worry about details such as timezones, etc.

I don't know if this was mentioned before, but why don't you use iTunes radio to stream. That way everyone could listen anytime they wanted to. Just my 2 cents

You will need licensing for Itunes. Most other services get around it. I've used shoutcast before (its quite simple & cross platform) for audio streaming.
Video streaming isn't real difficult either; it just requires a boatload of bandwidth ~ about 35 KB/s per viewer at barely watchable quality and more for better quality. Hit me up if you have any specific questions. |
